A showcase for TV with big-screen ambition at TIFF

The fact that the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival has chosen the Netflix movie Outlaw King for its big-screen gala opener is not lost on Michael Lerman.

From the 150 TV shows submitted to TIFF, Lerman had to whittle his choices down to five lucky entrants. They range from Amazon Studios’ thriller Homecoming starring Julia Roberts and the bittersweet Sorry for Your Loss with Elizabeth Olsen, to Eric Khoo’s Folklore: Mother’s Love & Pob, a six-part horror anthology from Asian directors.

Homecoming: “It’s such a perfect match. I’m a massive Mr. Robot fan (which Esmail created). It’s the incredible writing and storytelling. It’s Julia Roberts’ first episodic performance. It’s so cinematic and haunting. There are incredible tracking shots. It’s a little more noir in tone than what you might expect from Mr. Robot, but definitely has Esmail’s signature behind it.” (World premiere)
